What is the deal with Recall 0173? Harley-Davidson announced a recall recently to address an issue with the hydraulic clutch system on 2017 and 2018 Touring class motorcycles as well a some 2017 Softail models. If you own one of these bikes, perhaps some simple language about the recall would be appreciated. Here is the lowdown. First, this is a safety issue so you will want to be sure that you have the work done as soon as possible. The work is a relatively easy fix that corrects the condition in under an hour and of course, it will be done at no cost to you.
Basically, there is an internal leak of DOT 4 clutch fluid which could expose the hydraulic clutch circuit to air. This may lead to the inability to disengage the clutch. Obviously, there is an increased chance of a crash if the clutch fails to disengage while starting, shifting, or coming to a stop. Once your bike is on the tech’s bench, the secondary clutch actuator will be removed and the actuator piston assembly will be replaced. The clutch hydraulic system will also be drained and bled.
Everything will then be tested to be sure your clutch is operating exactly as it should.
